After several months of development, we’re happy to show you what we’ve been up to and update you on what to expect.

So first off, we’re aiming to release MoneyWiz 2.5 by the end of August. At this point it’s fully ready for iOS and Mac, and half ready for Android and Windows, that’s why we’re not releasing it right now. While the Android & Windows teams catch up on the new features, we’ll focus on bug fixing & general improvements on iOS and Mac.

The bad news is that things took much longer than expected since the Tags functionality was not as easy as we thought, mostly because it required a major rewrite of our reporting system to make it more versatile and able to handle one more data type – tags. The result of this delay forces us to release MoneyWiz 2.5 without investment accounts. Rest assured though – the next thing we’ll do after we release 2.5 is investment accounts. As promised they will come in MoneyWiz 2!

Here’s what to expect from MoneyWiz 2.5 once released:

  • Tags – ability to tag transactions, ability to add tags to budgets ( to automatically find transactions by specific tags) + tons of reports related to tags.
  • Receipts sync – we’re adding free receipts sync via Dropbox. All you need to do is to have a SYNCbits account and then link that account to your Dropbox account and MoneyWiz will start syncing the receipts. We’ll add other platforms in the future.
  • Online Banking categorization – we’ve spent a lot of time (and we actually have a private beta running with some ~100 beta testers) to improve on how transactions are automatically categorized. You’ll love the results! But on top of that, you will also be able to disable the auto-categorization feature if you want, via Settings.
  • Off-setting categories – in MoneyWiz 2.5 you will be able to create expenses or incomes with minus sign so you can off-set the value of categories. That will also allow you to handle reimbursements on top of the existing refunds functionality.
  • New reports – we’re adding 14 new reports so MoneyWiz will have total of 30 reports soon! Some of the new reports are tags related, some are generic. We’re also adding the ability to add any number of custom filters to the reports so you can funnel your data even more. We’re also adding 2 new types of reports – stacked bars and spreadsheet. Check out the screenshots below.
  • General improvements – lots of smaller improvements and bug fixes. Some performance improvements as well.

As noted, we hope to release 2.5 by the end of this month (August 2016) assuming that the Windows & Android teams manage to finish their part of the functionality. Once we release we’ll focus on delivering investment accounts as soon as possible.

    • Hi Shawn,

What do you mean by proper forecasting?

      Reply
      • Proper forecasting should be inclusive of budgeted items (or at least have the option to include them).

I received the following email response from Marina, in reference to including budgeted items in the Forecast:

“I’m glad to tell you the requested feature is milestoned for MoneyWiz 3 version. MW 3 is planned to be released in the first quarter of 2017.”

        THANK YOU!

Unfortunately not, due to to delays. As noted in the blogpost – once we release this version we’re moving on to investment accounts (stocks portfolio management) which we hope we’ll release around 1-1.5 months later.

Anyways, as I said – investment accounts will come in MoneyWiz 2! πŸ™‚

We are not working on a MoneyWiz API at this moment… we might do it in the future, as a matter of fact we’re doing something similar for our other product – MileWiz, which is a good experiment to see how we can reuse the technology for a MoneyWiz API but as I said – don’t hold your breath about a MoneyWiz API as it’s not in the works yet.

  • I understanding that the droid and the Windows updates are taking longer than excepted, but why can you not release the Apple updated, which was ready 2 months ago? I am assuming it may cause conflict on the backend (database) if someone has different versions, but can you just warn people or release for beta to IOS users?

    Reply
    • Hi Jay,

Whenever we make a new feature, it requires changes in the database format to store the information about this new feature. Since there are such changes there, it requires a newer version of the SYNCbits data format as well to make sure these changes sync across devices.
If a user has one device with the new feature and new database and SYNCbits data, and another device without them, then that other device won’t be able to sync them because it won’t know what to do with them.
For that reason, when we make new features we release MoneyWiz on all platforms at the same time. If we didn’t do that, for example if we only release iOS and Mac now and release Windows and Android when they are ready, what would happen is that customers who use MoneyWiz on Mac OS and Android or iOS and Windows for example, will end up with unusable MoneyWiz.

While we put one platform on hold for the others to catch up though, it doesn’t mean we are not doing anything on that one platform – we use the time to fix bugs πŸ™‚

      Reply
      • It might be time to think about whether it is realistic to release all platforms simultaneously, or if the SYNCbits format can recognise which version is there and work with the new or old version of the application. E.g. If there is data in new fields that the app version does not recognise, it leaves them alone. If creating new records from a 2.0 version, they create without the new 2.5 fields. But I understand it’s not always possible to do this…

        Reply
        • Hi David,

Unfortunately it doesn’t work like that because if it just ignores it (which we can easily make it do) then we need to develop a whole new mechanism to recheck previously ignored data, which will require a lot of time to develop on all platforms… hence the need for synchronized release. We just released though.

Maybe rather than always fixing bugs and adding new reports and colours and other pointless things, you could add a feature the was PROMISED years ago as part of MoneyWiz 2, investment accounts. As someone who paid for MoneyWiz 2 on the basis that investment accounts were promised as “to be added shortly”, I am seriously disappointed that this has waited literally until the last possible moment. Especially because you are now talking about MoneyWiz 3 and you haven’t even delivered on years old promises.

I’ve learnt my lesson why you guys though.. Don’t purchase the new version straight away as most of the new features listed will take years to be implemented.

    Reply
    • Hi John,

I am sorry that the investments account took so long to implement. It was not our intention. In any case though, they will be implemented & released as part of MoneyWiz 2, as promised.
We’re wrapping up on the 2.5 update that includes tags, receipts sync, new reports and some smaller new features, and once that update is released we’re focusing on investment accounts.

I have been a happy Moneywiz user for a number of years now – and its great to see continuous development and fantastic support. I notice you are introducing auto categorisation for online banking, but is there a way to auto categorise for those who prefer to import transactions manually? I recall that in a previous finance app I used, there was an ability to set my own rules to determine category, e.g. “IF payee like ‘*THAMES*’, SET category=’Water'”.

    Reply
    • Hi John,

MoneyWiz does not currently support such custom auto-categorization rules, but we’re actually discussing it internally to do it in the future because it allows to handle a lot of situations in a better way.

Yea its just crazy. This is why I made my previous statement. Whilst some of the features of 2.5 look nice, I’ve been waiting for Investment Accounts since V2 was released. I just hate to think how much longer Investment Accounts will take to implement, could be months and months.

      Reply
      • Honestly speaking, as someone who bought MW2 in Jan 2015 on the promise of Investment accounts, I can assure you that Investment accounts will be done by December 2017. However, there will be bugs and sync errors which will take another 6-8 months to fix.

I understand this isn’t what was promised, but that’s how the MoneyWiz team roll! Woohoo!

        Reply
      • It will be… I have read same stories years ago. You have to understand that they have to manage android and windows versions so everything will be delayed times three. We have been waiting for investment accounts for 4 years. My guess is around 2020 becacuse when they release version 2.5 there will be many bugs to fixed. Enjoy your waiting I gave it up in 2013.

        Reply
        • I am sorry to hear your disappointment Kamil. We’re releasing 2.5 next week and while indeed we may need to do some bug fixing after that (depends on feedback and what we’ve missed) as soon as we’re done with it we’re moving to investment accounts. So I am very hopeful that we’ll release 2.6 with investment accounts by mid December this year, so we can focus on just bug fixing after that.

  • I am waiting for MoneyDance 2017. I’d originally stayed with MW2 as their mobile app is better than MoneyDance’s, however, I think the lack of functionality (not to mention that I can’t put in incomes in the budgets) is enough for me to switch as soon as MD 2017 is released!

    • Hi Jason,

Incomes in budgets are coming to MoneyWiz 3. If there are other features you miss please let me know so I can tell you where they are on our schedule.
Right now we’re focused on releasing 2.5 on all platforms and this is a big update with tons of new features, such as Tags, receipts sync, lots of features related to online banking, offsetting of categories etc..

      Reply
      • Ilya,

I don’t care about tags or receipt sync. I am sure some people do, but the majority don’t. And I say this because tags have been introduced in file systems, online databases, etc and have yet to be utilised in a truly useful way.

What is useful, is offsetting incomes to categories which should have been done ages ago, not relegated to a newer version. Or investment accounts.

And honestly, I can ask you about features and where they are on the timeline but I remember asking about investment accounts in January 2015 and was assured that they would be coming in by June 2015.
So forgive me if I don’t take any time frames you give seriously.

I understand you have a very small team but a delay of 1.5 years is unacceptable.

Best of luck with the launch of 2.5 but it is sad to see that what was launched as a finance app that could be number 1 in this space is now being overshadowed by others, mostly due to false promises.

    etc.

As far as I can see there are only options for either income or expenses but not together.

Hello, in this new version there will be bank SMS import? This is a simple functionality but a really big help for classification the categories in real time.

    Reply
    • Hi Enio,

No bank SMS support. You can connect to your bank directly though via the online banking feature (if your bank is supported).
SMS importing is more complicated than it sounds for many reasons:
      * there is no unified format
      * we support banks in all countries
      * MoneyWiz provides consistent experience on all platforms, but such thing would be impossible on iOS due to iOS restrictions

Haven’t you thought about enabling budgets to FILTER OUT items with certain tag? As far as I understand, currently you can only select which tags MUST be present. I would need the exact opposite: e.g. budget for “Food” NOT marked with “Business” tag.

    Hi all,

maybe someone knows a way to help with my issue.

I am buying from time to time in Lidl.
    For example:
    6 x Acai
    5 x Aceola
    1 x Apple
    2 x Apricots
    3 x Avocado
    4 x Banana
    1 x Blackberry
    2 x Blueberries
    2 x Camu Camu berry
    4 x Cherries

I want to add a receipt with each position.
If in the future I would buy some bananas I would like to have a category:
    Lidl witch a subcategory Bananas.

After a month I will know how many kilos i bought. After 2 or 3 monts I will know how much bananas I use.

Is there a way to do this?

    • Hi Richard,

MoneyWiz is a finance software, so it’s purpose is to monitor transactions, budgets etc. It is not designed to monitor specific groceries though, so I am afraid that handling this scenario won’t work in MoneyWiz, unless you buy the different articles separately.
There is one other way to do it by the way, but I think it may be too much work: create separate category for each such thing (like banana, avocado etc) and then you can create a split category transaction and specify the amount you spent on each category/item.
