Happy New Year! 🙂

We’re very excited to show you what we’ve been working on for the past 2 months. MoneyWiz 2.3 comes with some great new features you’ll love!

We’ll submit update 2.3 by the end of January for iOS and Mac (both free & paid versions). Keep in mind that it usually takes 7-10 days for Apple to approve updates.

Here are the features highlights:

  • Improved transaction entry screen
  • Redesigned Reports section with new reports
  • Redesigned categories management in Settings (iOS only)
  • Various user experience changes

Here’s more info about the new features.

Improved Transaction Entry Screen

Over the past few months we’ve been focused to improve how you enter transactions, based on feedback. Here’s what the latest rollout of changes will do:

  • The focus will automatically move to the next field when appropriately (no need tap the Next button)
  • Category creation on the go (see screenshot)
  • By default a transaction will be assumed to have just 1 category making it possible for us to automatically close the categories view once you select a category (optimizing speed of entry). If you want to make a split, there’s an ON/OFF switch for it (see screenshot)

Redesigned Reports Section

We’ve redesigned the reports section and included new reports. Here’s the full list of reports in MoneyWiz 2.3:

Accounts

  • Net Worth
  • Balance Over Time
  • Cashflow

Budgets

  • Compare Budgets
  • Balance Over Time

Categories

  • Compare Expense Categories
  • Compare Income Categories
  • Expense Category Over Time
  • Income Category Over Time

Payees

  • Compare Expense Payees
  • Compare Income Payees
  • Expense Payees Over Time
  • Income Payees Over Time

Other

  • Statistics
  • Profit & Loss
  • Custom Report

Redesigned Categories Management on iOS

We know managing categories on iOS was somewhat confusing experience so we’ve decided to redesign this from scratch. Categories management will now follow the familiar hierarchy of visualizing categories which also allows for easily re-arranging and moving categories and sub-categories.

User Experience Improvements

We’ve made various improvements based on your feedback. To name a few:

  • On iPhone, the plus button to create new transaction is now in the middle of the screen to allow easy access regardless of which hand you are holding your iPhone with
  • When you make a transaction pending, MoneyWiz will only show a warning message if you are looking at your account balance without pending transactions.
  • We’ll show warning when you are about to un-reconcile a transaction that has previously been reconciled
  • more minor improvements…

Release & What’s Next

We’ll submit update 2.3 for iOS & Mac at the end of January. Expect it to be available for download after Apple approves it in around the first or second week of February.

The 2.3 release will come to Android in late February.

We’ll soon post a roadmap of our planned updates this year in a separate blogpost.

  • Is it possible to easily and quickly track my expanses as well as how much my roommates owe me if we often buy things together?

    • Hi Maciej,

While MoneyWiz doens’t have dedicated functionality to monitor against who owes you what, but one workaround (that I use personally) is to have an account called “Give & Take” or whatever you want, and just make transfers to this account…so for example, if I give someone $10 and I know they will give it back, I just make a transfer of $10 to this account and then transfer them back to the account where they gave them back, once they did.

  • This update looks great but the only thing holding me back to using your product is the fact that you can only use a category once in a single transaction. The reason I want to use the same category multiple times in a single transaction is to see individual spend of the same category.

    Eg;
Household: Electronics – TV (memo) $3000
Household: Electronics – Blu Ray player $500

Also instead of the refund strategy, I would like to see an option to place a deposit in a expense category. (eg. I might receive money that reimburse a certain expense catagory). The refund option only allows me to choose a previous transaction and have it refunded which is not what i’m after.

Until these can be added, it makes it hard to use your app which I think is a brilliant app.

    • Hi Dean,

      Thanks for the feedback.
If you break down the same category to multiple times, how does this affect you reports? My point is that it shouldn’t… the only difference would be that the information will be there should you need to check it later. But this can still be accomplished if you just note it down in the Notes field. If I am wrong please correct me as I’d like to understand the use case here…

As for reimbursements – we have this on our to-do list. It’s a highly requested feature so it will be done for sure!

      Reply
      • But is there a good reason why you can’t have the same category attached to different items in a split. If I’m buying gifts for people at the same time, then I would like to record each one separately, and also be able to refund them separately as well.

One other thing. It would be great if you didn’t capitalise each word when writing a description for a transaction. I spend a lot of time hitting the shift key on iOS to turn off the capitalisation after each space. Is there any particular reason that you do this? It’s a bit annoying for those of us who like to write in proper sentences.

        • Hi Ray,

There are thousands of things that are technically possible, but we implement new features based on demand rather than the sheer technical possibility. It’s an important way of doing business to allow us to satisfy the maximum number of users. This feature in particular sounds like something we can technically do but since you are the first one to ever request it, it is not high up on our todo list. I suggest this – post it as a feature request in our forums (we have a forum dedicated to feature requests) so other users can upvote for it and if a lot of other people request it, we’ll implement it sooner rather than later.

As for the auto capitalization – this is rather high on our to-do list and an option to enable/disable it will probably come in MoneyWiz 2.4.

          • That’s fair enough, and I expect most software houses work in the same way. I asked the question because I saw it not so much as a feature addition. From the layperson’s point of view, it looks as though restricting categories in this way was a deliberate choice rather than something that was omitted, so I wasn’t really asking why don’t you implement this feature, it was more a case of why did you code it so that this was not allowed. There’s a subtle difference. I could be wrong, but it looked like it would be extra work to disallow multiple categories, so I wondered why it was done this way.

          • But in any case, I’m glad to hear that the capitalisation is being sorted out; that was a bit annoying.

    • Which app are you currently using that offers this functionality?

I use this feature all the time in YNAB. When I buy multiple items at the store – Best Buy, Macy’s, hardware, etc – I like to break out items as Dean showed above – separating one electronic purchase from another for instance. I, like him, would find it irritating to be restricted in not being able to use the same category twice in a split transaction. Why would you limit that?

        Reply
        • Hi Valerie,

We don’t limit that on purpose. Our UI is different and with the current UI it is not possible to select one category multiple times because you don’t get a + button to add categories, but instead you see the list of categories and just select the ones you need. We believe this is a simpler and easier to use UI. A drawback with that is the fact that you can’t select one category multiple times within the same transaction. We have this feature on our radar though, but it’s not with high priority because very few people have requested it so far and we implement new features based on how many people they affect.

      • Hi Courtney,

We’re releasing MoneyWiz 2.2 for Android this week. The Android version is a little behind compared to iOS and Mac but we’ll catch up within the next month or so.
As for the subscription version for Android – we’ll release it this week together with the 2.2 update of the paid version. The subscription version will directly be released to version 2.2 and we’ll send a newsletter to all MoneyWiz subscribers when we release it.

    Reply
    • Hi Colin,

I am not sure I understand properly… what do you mean by “savings entries”? If you mean incomes, then you can add categories to incomes since MoneyWiz 1.0…but perhaps you mean something else?

The beta is now closed for new applications though since we’re so close to public release…

  • Once the Windows version is out and you have feature parity across the board, is there a plan to implement Investment accounts? I remember asking about this in November/December 2014 and now its January 2016. The stated goal was to have the same features on all platforms first so it syncs easily but now that we are approaching that stage, I’d really like to use MoneyWiz more than I do but I am stuck on using Quicken for my investments.

Also, please do implement the changes with the Budgets a lot of people have been asking about on the forums!

Other than that, appreciate the slow but hard work!

    • Hi Vish,

Oh yeah! We’re actually starting to work on tags as soon as we release update 2.3 (in a few weeks) and once tags are ready we’re moving on to Investment Accounts.

  • Those “low budget”/”budget exceeded”/”account negative” modal dialogs (you must press ‘ok’ to continue) could be changed to a notification that auto-hide after a few seconds? It’s really annoying and takes time for something that I already know or can read in a notification and continue working without bothering to confirm.

Iliya, I love MoneyWiz, but… what about mixed transactions ( expenses / incomes on the same transaction ) as present in many others similar products ?

    Reply
    • Hi Eduardo,

We’ll probably be doing this in MoneyWiz 3 as it’s more complex. Right now we want to deliver MoneyWiz for Windows and then deliver Tags and Investment Accounts along with some smaller improvements. Then we’ll focus on other large scale features such as mixed transactions.

        • Hi Eduardo,

I did not mean Tag Accounts but just Tags, and separately Investment Accounts. Tags will allow people to tag transactions as they wish. For example you can tag “2016-vacation’ or “tax deductible” or whatever you need…

    Hi Iliya,

Sorry again, but , please, what really means the expression “Over time” on some new 2.3 reports ?

    Thanks

    Reply
    • Hi Eduardo,

It means how something progresses over time… for example the “Balance Over Time” report under the Budgets section would be how the budget progressed over specified amount of time…for example in the last 6 months. Then you will see what the budget’s values were in the last six months, month by month (assuming it’s a monthly budget).

    • Hi Andrew,

Noted! Quite a few people have requested this actually and we plan to implement it when we do a major redesign in MoneyWiz 3. We have one more idea in mind which we may experiment with before that (in MoneyWiz 2) but most probably MoneyWiz for smartphones (iPhone & Android) will get rid of the menu in favor of tabs in MoneyWiz 3.

    Hi,

Is it possible that you add a report or something where I can show the expenses that I have in a tag but the report could include the images related to the expense?

This kind of report will make it easy for those moments when you have to relit business expenses for a travel or when you need to legalize all the expenses for a customer or company that you worked for.

    • Hi Johann,

You can view the attached images/receipts in transactions that are part of report… also you can export reports and include these images too. Doesn’t it work on your end?

    Hi Iliya,

Does Apple already approved the 2.3 ?

    Reply
    • So far they’ve only approved the free (subscription based) Mac app. The rest are still waiting, but we won’t release them until they approve all 4 (iOS free, iOS paid, Mac free, Mac paid) as this will break the sync. So we have to wait for them to approve all 4 and then they will all go live at the same time.

    • Hi Neil,

The iOS versions (both free & paid) were approved, and the free Mac version is approved. We’re waiting for the paid Mac version only. Once Apple approves that too, we’ll release all at once…and indeed it’s taking incredibly long – around 3 weeks now.

  • The focus will automatically move to the next field when appropriately (no need tap the Next button)

Have you really tested this out? Because it sucks. For instance when i’m entering an expense let’s say Lunch, i will enter an amout and than type lunch it will have an category preselected because i have already entered this type of expense. And this behaviour applies for most of the transactions. Now with your new feature categrory dropdown pop ups everytime, again with category preselected, but now i have to tap to dismiss it in order to complete the transaction. So now one of the most used function is much less usable…

    Reply
    • Hi Luchezar,

It is not supposed to do that, so you are experiencing a bug. Perhaps you use MoneyWiz under conditions we haven’t tested. Given that people can re-arrange the transaction entry form any way they want, there are too many combinations to test all.
Could you please e-mail our support at [email protected] and tell them:
      * On what device does this happen?
      * What is the order of your transaction entry form fields? (or just send a screenshot of the transaction entry screen)
      * Step-by-step description of what you do…what you enter first, where you tap etc…

      Thanks.

            – I installed de 2.3 Android version. I noted some issues. Where can I report it ? At the regular support e-mail ?

            Thanks again

  • Hi. I think it is not related to the sync. The slowness is mainly in when click on the plus button to enter transaction where it takes about 2 to 3 seconds to change to the transaction screen. In previous version it takes less than 1 second.

  • Although I think MoneyWiz for iPhone is great, I know it still lacks 2 major features :
    – an serious reconciliation feature (which could be implemented only in 2017 based on the roadmap)
    – the ability to have the same categories both in income and expenses (and get rid of the unconsistent “reimburse” feature)

PocketMoney is back. It used to be the greatest -by far- until its developer passed away. I am not sure if it can become the greatest again. MoneyWiz is still ahead, but for how long?

    Reply
    • Hi Fred,

Thanks for the feedback. Advanced reconciliation will come to the mobile version of MoneyWiz as stated in our roadmap. Currently it’s available in the desktop versions and most of our users use both (mobile + desktop) which allows them to access the feature there while we work on it for mobile.
As for merging the categories – we actually plan to allow offsetting a category by allowing you to enter a transaction with minus sign in any catgory (currently not allowed). I believe that will solve the use case you refer to. If I am wrong please tell me…
